Someone said cigarettes must be banned because smoking kills people.. Well, so do guns and alcohol.. AND CARS! It's scary how people have nothing better to do but judge people 24/7 while trying to make them more like them or if that doesn't work - remove them from society. I've quit smoking years ago and I have no problem with people smoking.
About the lung cancer - the truth is that no doctor can tell whether it is caused by smoking or not.

High percentage of lung cancer victims are non-smokers. In some years the percentage is higher than that of smokers. It's not about second hand smoking.. Whatever the cigarette smoke has can also be found on every highway or large busy street - minus the nicotine (which is not harmful to humans.. Actually it's pretty close to caffeine - and that we all enjoy). So, just because you don't like the sight of a smoking person that doesn't mean he or she must be punished for it.

Smoking is very harmful to others and an average of 400,000 people die of it a year. 50,000 people die from exposure to second hand smoke. 8.6 million people are ill because of smoking or the smoke. Although it is very addicting, smoking is harmful to others and had a large death toll. Innocent bystanders are also affected. Even though the FDA enforces rules for the cigarette companies to follow, such as putting images of the outcome of smoking, people still smoke and innocent bystanders are still harmed.

While smoking is banned, it is a persons own choice to start smoking and everyone has been informed of the consequences. That being said the government could put in more regulations to make it harder to obtain cigarettes and thereby making it harder to start in the first place. There are so many people who are already addicted to smoking so banning it altogether would be a cruel thing to do to them.

What I think is prohibition of smoking won't do much, though being written on packet "smoking is injurious to health "people consume them, so it completely depends on a persons' willingness to get rid of this. In this regard what government can do is to come up with advertisements putting emphasis on side-effects of smoking and to organize talk shows where people can come up with their queries in front of experts and doctors.

Worked in a cigarette factory for 14 years and if you only knew of some of the stuff that gets mixed in with tobacco! If you want to harm your own body that's one thing but the people around you should have their rights too! We go out to eat more often now that you cant smoke in public eating places.

I don't think banning smoking is a good idea as people are educated enough to know their good and bad even though if they are choosing to smoke it?s their personal choice and Govt cannot force any decision on its people in a democratic country like India. Even if it will be banned people will search for another option to harm their health as well said necessity gives birth to all inventions and it is general tendency that humans are more attracted to the things which they cannot get/reach easily. They will buy it anyway by paying some extra money to unauthorised dealers.

So, the understanding of quitting smoking should come from one's inside by it cannot be put forcefully on any one.

No I don?t agree with a complete ban on smoking. But I will be happy with the idea that it should be banned in public places. All of us know that smoking is not good for health. Somebody smokes by their habit but somebody smokes to reduce their work pressure or any type of tension. If smoking be banned in public places we may reduce smoking habit and I think it would be great for other public and even for his/her health also.
In other countries like in UK smoking is going to be banned in public places.

It has become fashionable in the world today to condemn smoking. However, although I feel that smoking can be harmful, I do not think it should be banned completely.
Let me deal first with the positive side of smoking. First, smoking undoubtedly helps many people to relax. For some, it even improves concentration. Many people like to smoke before exams or when they are relaxing with friends.

A further point is that governments throughout the world make huge profits from levying taxes on cigarettes. This provides funds which are used for building schools, hospitals and other public amenities.

The tobacco industry also employs tens of thousands of people throughout the world, particularly in poorer countries like Zimbabwe or India. Without cigarettes, these people would have no jobs.

I would also argue that people should have the right to choose whether they smoke or not. People should not smoke in a room where there are non-smokers but surely they should be free to smoke elsewhere.

The arguments against smoking are well known. Smoking has been shown to be dangerous to health. Heart disease, bronchitis and lung cancer have all been linked.
A further issue is that smoking costs governments millions of pounds because of the large number of people who need treatment in hospitals for smoking related problems.
There is also concern today about passive smoking. Recent research has shown that non-smokers can suffer health problems if they spend long periods of time among people who do smoke.

In general, I think the world would be a better place without cigarettes. However, the decision as to whether to smoke or not should be for each individual to make.

I do think smoking should be banned in public places where there will be non-smokers mixed in. While it would be nice to just kick the activity of smoking out all together, I would be very surprised if anyone could convince people to pass a law banning smoking in apartments and the like, because while problems might occur after that smoker has moved out, that individual is responsible for his or her domain while living there, and so we move into the whole "personal rights" thing, which tends to tick off a lot of people. That's probably why people have only gone as far as compromises, like having rooms that are strictly for smokers or strictly for non-smokers. Referring back to public places, interestingly enough there are some laws in place in various regions that deal with smoking in public areas. Unfortunately, the big problem with these laws is they are never enforced. For example, in Washington state, the Smoking in Public Places law "prohibits smoking within twenty-five feet of entrances, exits, windows that open, and ventilation intakes that serve enclosed areas where smoking is prohibited." This is all well and good, but no one actually cares about this rule. People smoke directly outside of doorways and windows all the time, and there are conveniently placed ash trays right in front of many doors, like an open invitation to stop and smoke there. There is also a rule that if you smoke at a bus stop, you can't smoke inside the bus kiosks, yet I have sometimes been driven from my bench by people smoking inside or just next to it. You can call for laws until the cows come home, but if people don't report violations, or cops aren't around/decide there are more pressing matters to consider, it won't matter. It's a shame, because I would love to be able to walk outside of a building and not be assaulted by smoke.

Think smoking should be banned in enclosed public areas. An large outdoor area that is open to the public is acceptable as well as a designated area for smoking. However, if someone wants to avoid the smoke for health reasons or if they just don't like it, they need to be able to do that. There are many facts about second hand smoke and people who want to stay away from that need to be able to.

I have a great example where smoking should be banned: the school restroom. I know they say smoking is not allowed in our school, but kids still continue to smoke in there every day. The teachers are aware because they stand in there during hall breaks, but nothing has changed. I always come out smelling like smoke and it bothers my allergies and asthma. It makes me feel bad and I'm sure that is how some people feel in public places like restaurants and stores. That's why I feel there should be a specific area for smoking or no smoking allowed at all.

Today, life is so complex; people have more stress than ever before so many of them find smoking as a solution to relax. As you all know, smoking is harmful, it is dangerous for your health and it even affect to economy so I think that smoking should be banned completely.

Firstly, smoking has been shown to have a bad effect on health. Have you ever wondered that how many people die each year because of smoking? Well, according to World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco kills 5.4 million people a year and it is predicted to kill 1 billion people in the 21st century if current smoking trends continue. People who smoke regularly are easily to suffer many diseases such as heart disease, bronchitis or lung cancer. Moreover, not only smokers but also non-smokers can suffer health problems if they breathe the smoke from smokers around them. Scientists have proved that non-smokers have to suffer the same risks as smokers themselves.

Secondly, smoking also affect to economy. In fact, nobody can refuse benefits that tobacco industry brings to many countries. Governments get profits by taxing cigarettes. Tobaccos industry also provides jobs for people from developing countries. But besides these benefits, the cost of smoking is enormous. People who addict to tobacco pay much money to buy cigarettes a year. A further issue is that governments around the world have to pay billion dollars because of the large number of people who need treatment in hospitals for health problems.

In conclusions, smoking may have some benefits but it has more harm. If anyone who just cares about the benefits of smoking, they should know that every 6.5 seconds, a smoker dies. The world will become better and no more people will have to die because of health problem caused by smoking if it is banned completely. Everyone should not smoke to have a better health for you and people around you.
